Required video and audio codecs under Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by James Behnke

I'm a new Ubuntu user and have just installed version 10.10. I tried to export a video from Openshot to one of the HD formats (YoutTube HD) and was told that I needed to have the following codecs installed in order to proceed:

libx264
libmp3lame

I performed a search for these terms in the Ubuntu software center and was informed that both of these items were already installed on my system. I tried to uninstall libx264, but the Software Center told me that if I were to do this I would have to uninstall VLC player as well.

What should I do in order to enable these codecs under Ubuntu given that the software Center says that they are already present?

You need to install libavformat-unstripped-52 & libavcodec_unstripped-52, as they are restricted formats.

I've noticed that taking this action will uninstall several similar packages...will this break any of my other programs such as VLC player?

Don't think so - these versions just include restricted formats as well as the open formats.

I had an almost idenical problem and based on your answer I loaded libavcodex-52 and still got error. I then loaded libavcodex-extra-52 from ubuntu software center and I no longer got the error about missing libx264 and libmp3lame.

Thank you for having this forum.

I'm not positive (its been a while), but I think that my problem was solved when I installed the "ubuntu restricted codecs" package from the Software Center.

I opened OpenShot sometime after doing this and all of the export options were there.

Thanks all for your comments :-)
