Can OpenShot import a series of images with automatic fade in and out?

Asked by Shaved Wookie

I'm really impressed with how development of OpenShot has been progressing. Congratulations!

I'm wondering if this fade in/out could be used for my following usecase:

I have a series of timelapse photos taken at one photo every day. I'd like to be able to import each image one frame later in the timeline than the last, and fading in over a couple of frames and then fading out over a couple of frames.

Is this possible by the cli / gui or would I need to manually change the fadein/out for each image...

Thanks.
I 'm thinking that you must do that operation for each image.

You can use the "Import Image Sequence" option in the "File" menu. It will
let you import all images as a single clip. Once you have a single clip,
you can fade it in and out. Also, you might want to play around with the
"Frames per Images" setting on the import screen. That setting can make the
image sequence much longer, by duplicating frames.

NOTE: All images must be named in a numeric sequence, such as
image001.jpeg, image002.jpeg, etc...

Good luck!

If I do that though it's only going to fade the entire clip in at the start and out at the end though, isn't it? I'm trying to fade *every individual image* in and then out. Doing it manually for each image though for a 10 minute ntsc video would mean manually adding 18,000 fade ins and fade outs by hand...

ouch.

So, is the answer basically that OpenShot can't do it?

Sorry, I guess I do not fully understand what you are trying to accomplish.
How many images do you need to import, 18,000? If so, does each image
represent a single frame of video? Thanks!

Not quite. I want each image to fade in over a couple of frames and fade out. As it fades out, new images are fading in. A new image would start fading in on every frame, but would show (at varying levels of opacity) for maybe 7 frames each.

Here, this image should make it much easier to understand:

Just substitute having 10,000+ images instead of 7 :)

Nice image! I understand what you are trying to do now. Unfortunately,
this is not very easy to accomplish in OpenShot at the moment. The only way
I can think of is create folders on your file system that each contain 7
frames, and import each folder as an image sequence, then set the fade in /
out properties using a custom (i.e. very small) amount in the clip
properties. This would take forever. =)

You would need to write custom code to accomplish this. Eventually, we are
planning on adding a "Macro" feature, that would allow users to script up
things just like this. So, maybe this can be a use-case for that feature.

Thanks,
