Where do I get libx264 and libmp3lame?

Asked by andypiper

I just installed openshot and want to export to YouTube HD but when I try to do that it reports that libx264 and libmp3lame are not installed. I'm on Karmic and have the libmp3lame0 and libx264-67 packages installed.

To install those formats / codecs, please install the "extra" or
"unstripped" version of "libavformat". If you search for "libavformat" in
Synaptic, you should be able to find it.

This should add mp3 and h.264 encoding.

Thanks,

OK thanks - that unfortunately leads to a minefield of dependency pain with mencoder, mplayer and the like ending up broken and wanting to uninstall things. Hmm. Have to decide which way to jump I guess.

Many programs that use libavformat have dependencies to both the unstripped
version and the regular version... so it let's the user easily switch
between them. However, not every program does that correctly.

Best of luck!

I have messed up all my audio in lucid, installing those "untripped" libraries. They have removed a lot of standard libraries and other software doesn't play anymore

Hi everyone! First of all, I have to say that my english not so good, but I will understand us :)

I have installed the "extra" and "unstripped" version of libavformat, and I have the last Openshot version (1.1.3) and no runs yet, I can't export my project.
So, I read a lot of messages in a lot forums and I'm desperate :( Is it a bug? or, there is a solution but I can't find it?

Thank you very much!!

The "unstipped" version will only work if you installed OpenShot from our
PPA on Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04. How did you install OpenShot? Thanks!

I really think OpenShot should simply go to the trouble to recognize libmp3lame0 > That is the varient that Ubuntu makes available via the Software Center. If it weren't over a year that this condition existed I wouldn't complain; but the bottom line for me is: I go out of my way to avoid intalling driver varients that aren't released in software center because invariably some conflict crops up when I don't adhere to that simple formula. It also makes other transitions much easier (I.E. an entire reformat and installing software from scratch, etc)

Like I said...It's been over a year that the ONLY varient Software Center is offering is libmp3lame0.

Oh well...I'll go install the varient OpenShot demands and I hope no conflicts arrive when I uninstall mpelame0 for openshot.

For the record: OpenShot ROCKS. My only desire is for it to gravitate to a more user friendly install (for the broader community) that uses the mp3 ubuntu is supporting. That is probably demanding. Ubuntu certainly isn't the only flavor; but seems to be most prevalent.

The actual problem is double.
On a side, this is a problem of licence that the only Fluendo paid this licence for Canonnical and then, only Gstreamer can use the mp3 audio codec (libmp3lame0) and h264 video codec for the user who install them. But that's not touch others softwares who are not using Gtreamer framwork like ffmpeg and mencoder.
On another side, the actual and the future framework of Openshot (MLT and libopenshot) are using FFmpeg and for this reason of licence they can not provide directly in the Ubuntu Software Center. It is why the user must install a external repository like Medibuntu or sven 'PPA. And yet, it is a fork of FFmpeg who is in the USC and Medibuntu repository. More explanations here : http://ffmpeg-users.933282.n4.nabble.com/How-to-get-good-x264-compression-td4621261.html

To trust in your package manager. :-)
Anyway you could use the ppa-purge for remove a problem with a software installed by a PPA. See here how to do that :

Can you help with this problem?
