Sorry I didn't make it clear. The codec was mp4 in an mp4 format. The
others I tried were h.264 in an mp4 file format, and h.264 in an MTS
format. All three of these gave the same problem. (and still do)

I have also experienced the same problem with the latest version of
kdenlive from TJ's ppa. I have only tested kdenlive with mp4 codec in
mp4 format, and h.264 codec in MTS format. I used the same clips in both
OpenShot and kdenlive.

The earlier version of kdenlive which comes with Ubuntu wouldn't work at
all with my MTS files.

I think the problem must be with mlt or ffmpeg. TJ's debugger also
pointed to that.
