Offline open street map data

Asked by Tom Cassimon

Hi all,

i'm just new and i'm willing to contribute. I'm a programmer (in Java) as primary occupation. I was looking to the openstreetmap project and the opensatnav (which uses the osm data). It looks very promising. I would like to know if there are plans to use the osm data locally without data connection. In Belgium (my home country) i have a data connection and the app works great and looks good. But in foreign countries the cost for the data connection is way beyond reasonable prices, so i would like to cache the maps.

Is there a plan for implementing it on the opensatnav app?

Regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,
I'm travelling at the moment and are having the same problem! The two problems are that OSN maps are image based so they take up a lot of room on the SD card and that most map sites have terms that don't let us bulk download the files.
There is a competing open source app called osmand that still needs a lot of work but it works OK when offline. The maps are vector based so it is possible to download many countries and still have room on your SD card.
It's a shame to recommend someone else's app but that's the way it is :)

Can you help with this problem?
