How to update Open Office in Ubuntu

Asked by Thomas Moriarty

Installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago, now see that there is an update to Open Office. The distribution of Ubuntu came with Open Office 2.0. I got a newsletter from Open Office to say version 2.2.1 is available. Following the link in the email, I found a site with a link to download the Linux version. This was about 120 M, and I left it downloading overnight. In the morning it said it had completed the download, and it was in \.

1) How should I go about installing the update?

2) I went into System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager, and told it to check for updates: It did some stuff that was probably useful, but not relevant. I then did a search on the internet, and found a question and answer on this topic, that said I should add the following in the repositary dialog. http://people.ubuntu.com/~doko/OOo2 This did not work. Now every time I run the Synaptic Package Manager, it starts with an error message quoting this url, and suggesting I fix it in the repositary dialog. However, when I go into the Repositary section of the program, it doesn't show this item anywhere, or have any obvious way to fix the problem. How do I fix this problem?

3) Where is the file, package or whatever it is I downloaded? The download program said it was in \, and allowed me to double click on it, but it just opened some sort of file manager that listed loads of files containe in it. Today, when I go to Places - Computer - File System, it's not there.

4) Most important, where should I find documentation on this so I can read it up and not trouble the community with basic problems. I searched Open Office help, but could find no relevant entry under "Update", "Upgrade" etc. The Desktop Guide to Ubuntu says software is maintained by the package managers, but the package manager doesn't seem to know anything about Open Office. A search in Synaptic produces no entries relevant to Open Office. The Open Office download site gives a download link, and support (such as mirror sites) if I have problems with the download, but no information about what to do after I have downloaded.

Thanks in advance for help

Thanks for your question,

What version of Ubuntu do you have ?
Your current version of open office automatically receive security updates but you should have the latest Ubuntu (Feisty 7.04) to have the latest open office.

You should NOT install software in another way that this one (except if the software don't exist on the ubuntu repositories) :

actually, i have the same problem. unlike the asker, i did trouble the community with the basic problem. though so far, there's not reply yet, perhaps because it's midnight. wish someone can help me tomorrow.

by the way, i'm using ubuntu 10.10, and there's no available update there. i ask the question to avoid in order to avoid problems.

Can you help with this problem?
