.xls vs .ods

ms xp is unable to open .ods with .xls. How come?

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly - are you trying to open a .ods file on Windows XP using MS office? If so, this won't work out of the box (if at all). MS doesn't support the Open Document format by default. There are third party (although sponsored by MS) plugins for office 2003 and higher, but as far as I know, the spreadsheet version is still very unstable. If you want to open .ods files on Windows XP, your best bet is to download and install OpenOffice.org. Visit www.openoffice.org for more details.
