Too many sudden bugs with my OpenOffice

Asked by achevrier

Hi,

I could say I need help using OpenOffice, because of too many current crashes apparitions.

I'm Dapper Drake user.
I've used Oooo (2.0 distribution packages) for 1 year without any problem at all.
Suddenly, 5 days ago, Oooo started bugging.

It first began with calc, after entering a "-" in a so simple formula: a1-b2+d3 for a calc of 4 lignes a 4 column ....
Then every time I wanted to change a sign in a formula, Oooo calc close suddently, and launched recovery process.

My Oooo writer has began to be unstabled too, crashing sometimes.

I've not succeeded to solve this problem by myself, after having try complete openoffice.org desinstall, reinstall processes via synaptic. I thought I did, because Oooo seemed to work better, but crashes re-apeared today.

I've read I should install 2.2.1 version from official sources.

I don't know what I should do ? However, one thing is sure : I have to finish a professional work using Oooo very quickly ...

If some one could help me ...

Try this command:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
If Ooo doesn't work, try this one (all in a row):
sudo apt-get install --reinstall openoffice.org openoffice.org-base openoffice.org-calc openoffice.org-common openoffice.org-core openoffice.org-evolution openoffice.org-gnome openoffice.org-gtk

Hi Andrea

Thanks for your lightning help ! ;)

I've tried sudo dpkg --configure -a, then restart my computer, re-opened Oooo calc file, and tried to use it as normal. For now, it seems working. :-)

However, before closing this topic, if you've got few seconds more, could you give me small explanation about < dpkg -- configure -a command > ? (just to understand ...)

Thank you again !

Of course!
This command reconfigure non configured packages or with a bad configuration. You can know how the command works typing
man dpkg
and finding the '--configure' option.

Sorry again !!!

But : problems I had still exist !

I thought they were evaporated, but they come back and still crash my Calc OpenOffice files, particularly when I enter a sign or when I want to modify a formula or a text.

I try Andrea recommended commands :
1/ sudo dpkg --configure -a
2 sudo apt-get install --reinstall openoffice.org openoffice.org-base openoffice.org-calc openoffice.org-common openoffice.org-core openoffice.org-evolution openoffice.org-gnome openoffice.org-gtk

Arghhhhh !

Try to rename the directory ~/.openoffice.org2 to ~/.openoffice.org2.old

Hi Andrea

I had already renamed ~.openoffice.org2 to ~/.openoffice.prg2.old, and unfortunatly, problems have appeared again and again.
I'm trying to stay in zen attitude ...

This is very strange: the problem is not the configuration and not the software...
Try to check for updates or upgrade your old version. If the problem persist, report a bug linked to this question.

Thanks a lot Andrea
Maybe a last question before closing this topic ?

"check for updates or upgrade your old version" =>
As Dapper Drake user, in synaptic, OpenOffice version I'm using is the latest I could find in packages list (which are all installed):
openoffice.org 2.0.2-2ubuntu12.4 (and base, calc, common, core, draw, evolution, gnome, gtk, help-en-us, help-fr, impress, java-common, |10n-common, |10n-en-gb (us, fr), math, thesaurus, writer)

I think, the only way to update or upgrade, seems to install .deb packages directly from official openoffice.org web site.

I've read a lot of topic on Ubuntu forums, recommanding to replace OpenOffice Ubuntu packages with offical OpenOffice packages from OpenOffice.org web site. That's a lot confusing and difficult to understand. For me, it would be preferable to use Ubuntu packages, particularly for this so usefull application.

An other way recommanded is to upgrade Dapper to newest Ubuntu versions. However, I can't find insurances of long term supports for newest version.

Maybe ... there is other ways you have heard about ?

Anyway, I will report a bug and I thank you a lot for your help.

If you want to substitute the older openoffice with the new one, you can use the deb package.
The next LTS is Gutsy, but I suggest to use non-LTS versions because you can upgrade your distro automatically.

in addition :
I've remembered my OpenOffice packages came from official version I intalled 1 year ago, instead of Ubuntu distribution packages. I think during this year, I've re-installed OpenOffice using included Ubuntu packages. And I did it again, following Andrea suggestions.

Sure, I've had a mix of this two installation.
So, I've tried to clean this.
Before trying to upgrade my Ubuntu version from dapper to newests, I've solved my problem getting as follow :

1 / I opened synaptic and removed (complete remove option) all packages begining with openoffice.org
2/ I let packages which were (or seemed to be) impossible to remove (some of concerning languages)
3/ I installed via synaptic, one package named OpenOffice.org, wich has installed all other packages needed.

Then, OpenOffice is now stable with new and better operationnal options.

If this could help someone ...

Eheh, unfortunately, the Ubuntu package manager (and also the other package managers) doesn't consider "self-installed" applications. Remember to use only deb packages or remember to remove the software before upgrading.

Cheers,
Andrea
