Kanban view introduces a UX inconsistency

Asked by Alan Lord

Our customer loves the new Kanban view. A lot.

But they have reported that it works in a different way to the tree view...

If you just open a record from the Tree View (unless you specifically click the pencil icon) it opens in View mode. If you then Edit it and Save that record, it takes you back to that record's View Mode. (Our user thinks this is right, so he can continue to examine the data of that record). If you open a record from the Tree View using the Pencil icon, it opens in Edit mode. When you save, you are returned to the Tree View.

If you open a record from the new Kanban View, the only way I can see to open it, is in Edit mode. Then, when you Save that record it then takes you back to the Kanban View.

I accept that the system is actually being consistent, but our customer's perception is that it isn't. I think there should be an option about how records are opened from the Kanban view; either to Edit *or* View mode.

In fact the behavior is very simple: when you click "Save" you go back to the previous page, regardless of where you were coming from: list view, kanban view, or read-only/view form. The system is being very consistent indeed.

I agree there are many situations where this behavior will not be optimal, and users have to get used to it. Once they understand it fully they are better able to choose the best mode of operation according to what they will be doing next, without losing the context. The kanban view however is seen as an equivalent of a "read-only form view", so it is logical in that case that the only option available is the edit mode.

Personally I'm not satisfied with this at the moment, and we are certainly looking for a way to further improve the UX in the next version.

Not sure if that helps...

Thanks Olivier,

We both agree the system is actually being consistent, and I am glad that you think the UX can be further improved.

As I am not, by any means, a UX designer, I don't really feel that well equipped to suggest things in this area, but my customer is "right" when he think that it isn't working the way it does elsewhere. It's a perception thing really...

Perhaps a couple of extensions to user preferences are in order here:

1. Ability to choose the mode records are opened from a Kanban view
2. Ability to choose the default view of a module, e.g. Tree, Kanban, Calendar etc...

Just some thoughts.

Those are very interesting suggestions... As you will be coming to the Community days 2012 we will be able to discuss it for OpenERP 7.0, based on some actual UX propositions/prototyping :-)

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Alan Lord for more information if necessary.
