Why were many modules moved to the category "Hidden"?

The field "category" of __openerp__.py was set to "Hidden" in numerous modules at revno 5214.3.17 (revid:<email address hidden>)
What does that mean?
Are these modules somehow deprecated or outdated?

From my own investigation I seem to understand that the category is now beeing used to construct the "install new features" dialog, and "Hidden" modules are left out if this dialog.
Can someone please confirm this ?
