Searching in different language than english gives english results

Asked by Harmel Delphine (OpenERP) on 2011-06-28

language = french
using demo data

* Warehouse > Tracability > Stock moves
* From the list of stock moves, enter "shelf" in the filter by product

Obtained result : it displays result using the translation of "shelf" in french (étagère 1)

Expected result : it displays an empty list of result as there is no match with shelf. The system should not take the translation to filter the list view

(converting to a question, this really seems like a FAQ)

Hi Delphine,

This is not a bug, but a feature, albeit perhaps not the most intuitive one.

The behavior is simple: when you are searching on a translatable field (like product names), the system always searches in 2 languages at the same time: you current language (user prefs) and the default language (en_US).
You won't normally notice this if you have a non-english database, because all translations will be identical (english name=french name). However if you are on a demo database or actually use multiple languages, you will notice it.
These alternative results may provide "similar matches", and may also help detect errors in translations, such as the one described in bug 802988 (if you duplicate a product, you need to change all the translations of the previous name, not just the current language).

Olivier Dony (OpenERP) suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #1691: “Searching for products in a language may give results from other languages”.

Can you help with this problem?
