Uploading clip art: no 'manage files' option to upload a png for display

Asked by David C. King on 2011-01-20

The FAQ below also says to upload the png first, which doesn't agree with the statement on the upload page that says only SVGs may be uploaded. Am I missing something or is this an error?

http://openclipart.org/wiki/FAQ#How_do_I_go_about_uploading_properly.3F_or..why_isn.27t_my_clipart_showing_a_preview_image.3F

Hi David

The wiki is no longer being used (or updated regularly). It is an old method
that was for when OCAL was on the CCHost system.
Thumbnails are generated automatically now.

Thanks for catching this. If you want, you could change that wiki page to
how we currently do things, so that less confusion happens! Eventually the
wiki will be discontinued and shut down, but that's not for a long time
yet, so anything you can do to help in the meantime would be appreciated.
Let me know if you would like to change it.

Ahh, I thought this might be the case. Thanks for your prompt reply. I'd
be happy to change the FAQ if I could answer the question as to what to do
if no thumbnail is generated, but the best I could do would be to suggest
asking the same question on the launchpad system!

If no thumbnail is generated then it means there might be a problem with the
file itself. Or it could be a filter in inkscape this is not a problem but
the auto thumbnail generator doesn't know how to deal with filters.
I've seen thumbnails generated for:

   - moving svgs
   - svgs with javascript

The auto converter has problems with text (they appear as little squares),
but any vectors still appear. We encourage all text to be converted to paths
anyway so this shouldn't be a problem.

Does this answer your question?

Yes, thank you. My Inkscape SVG did contain a blur effect...I have to
convert filtered objects to bitmaps in order for them to be renderable in a
PNG (again, via Inkscape), but I don't keep them in the original SVG file.
I haven't tried to upload clipart with the bitmaps included, so I don't
know if that would work.

We ask that you don't embed bitmaps into the svg files. :-)
That isn't a true svg, and (as you've seen) the auto converter will have
problems with having bitmaps included.
Doing so also increases the size of the file unecessarily, and will stop
other users from being able to scale the svg properly.

I hope this helps to answer your question. :)
Let me know if you find a solution.
