REQUEST: label physical layout

Asked by Sam

I study a foreign language (viz. Arabic) and Onboard greatly helps me to type foreign scripts. Therefore I use my hardware Latin keyboard and look at the onscreen keyboard to find matching foreign keys.

Could you label onscreen keyboard with not only *logical layout*, e.g., Arabic, but also the *physical keyboard layout* (QWERTY, AZERTY, and so on) for easier guidance?

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion.

As the enhancement seems to be useful, I created a corresponding bug report.

Have a nice day.

It's very kind of you. Will be here ready to test and debug every developer version.

Onboard not being compatible with newer Technologies like Wayland and GNOME3, a rewrite of Onboard was started under the name of OnboardOSK more than one year ago. If the feature you are looking for gets implemented, it will rather get implemented in OnboardOSK than in Onboard. Unfortunately, I have not heard anything from its developer for a while. We will see...

Never mind, they should carefully note the Onboard project was abandoned in favour of the total rewrite OnboardOSK.

I'm going to check current state of the OnboardOSK and how my idea can be implemented there.

Thank you again for the information.

The original plan was to keep Onboard in maintenance mode until OnboardOSK could replace it. But I don't know whether OnboardOSK is still being developed.

I think this is the same (minor) issue I'm having with Cinnamon. I have a little applet in my panel where I switch between US, Polish, and Korean, but Onboard always says EN at the top and the characters do not change when I hit the right alt key.

Certainly! Here's how the onscreen keyboard layout could be labeled to indicate both the logical layout (Arabic) and the physical keyboard layout (QWERTY, AZERTY, etc.):
In this layout, the physical keys are labeled according to the QWERTY layout, while the logical Arabic characters are indicated above each key. This should provide easier guidance for typing in Arabic using a Latin keyboard. Let me know if you need further assistance!
