Ubuntu 10.10 for Toshiba Portege M780

Asked by Rohin Galhotra

Hi, I recently recieved a Toshiba Portege M780, which is a laptop with a screen that can rotate and fold down into a tablet. I was wondering when Ubuntu 10.10 would become more friendly towards the computer itself. When in windows, if you would go into tablet mode, the screen would automatically rotate to accomodate the new orientation. Also, the keyboard would also be able to be accessed without going into many menus. Plus, since a secondary batter is attached to the pc, it makes it harder to rotate the pc itself to use ubuntu. If you try to rotate the screen, then the touch screen is not adapted and calamity occurs. I really enjoy Ubuntu, but these few setbacks prevent me from using it very much. Thank you.

I face a similar problem with my Acer monitor when I rotate it to portrait. Still looking for a way to rotate the touch functionality. Is there a configuration file to rotate the touch?

So, to rephrase your question as three questions:

Question 1) I was wondering when Ubuntu 10.10 would become more friendly towards the computer itself.

This is better asked elsewhere. If you are being serious, you can file a bug (with details) against the ubuntu project:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

Question 2) When in windows, if you would go into tablet mode, the screen would automatically rotate to accomodate the new orientation.

It's safe to assume that you are asking about rotation support in Ubuntu. There have been several bugs filed for this. If you are interested in this, please subscribe to one or more of the following:
  https://launchpad.net/bugs/599478
  https://launchpad.net/bugs/217182
https://launchpad.net/bugs/627629 (he mentions a screen rotation script)

Screen rotation was mentioned in this thread:
  https://lists.launchpad.net/multi-touch-dev/msg00688.html

In addition, we have discussed this in some detail on the team. I have forwarded those emails to the multi-touch-dev list, for your reference as well as other who may be interested in this topic (the mails will now come up in google searches). For now, you can view the long thread here:
  https://lists.launchpad.net/multi-touch-dev/threads.html#00761

Once it moves off the front page, I don't believe that link will show you anything. For future reference, the first email in the thread is here:
  https://lists.launchpad.net/multi-touch-dev/msg00761.html

Question 3) Also, the keyboard would also be able to be accessed without going into many menus.

This is being addressed with all the OSK work. You can follow that in this blueprint (which links to other blueprints):
  https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/multimedia-dx-n-virtual-keyboard

We didn't have the time or resources to work on OSK in Maverick or Natty. We're hoping to get to it in Natty+1.

Can you help with this problem?
