nssbackup doesn't backup

Asked by phxsmiley

I installed nssbackup through Synaptic, and all seemed to install correctly.

When I start up nssbackup-config-gui, I'm able to set up my backup as I had it in sbackup.

General - use custom
Include -
/media/smile1/smmusic/
/media/smile1/ann/

exclude -
<nothing>

destination -
selected a destination on another local drive /media/hd300/backup-personal

time -
specified daily at 4AM

purging -
logarithmic

report -
put in my email and smtp server name. The 'test mail settings' passed

Press 'backup now', I see a window pop up to say that it is starting the backup, then finishing the backup, all within about 5 seconds!

Look in the destination directory, and there are no files created whatsoever.

There must be something simple I'm missing here...

Hi,

Can you precise the version of nssbackup you are using?
I would also like to know if you launched nssbackup config gui as Admin (from System=>Administration menu) or as a desktop user (from Applications=>Accessories menu).

In the first case, the log file will be located by default into /var/log while in the second case it will be in ~/.local/share/nssbackup (IIRC) .
Can you look at the contains of this file and provide it to use?

Thank you for your understanding.
Regard
wattazoum

Also, I have 2 profiles, one called 'pix' and one called 'personal'. The files above are the 'personal' profile.

Another bit of information: I had sbackup on my system and that was working ok.

When I first installed nssbackup, I did so by downloading and installing using 'make install'. When it did that, I was getting the same behavior. That's when I read through the information and re-installed using Synaptic.

Sbackup was removed when installing through synaptic. Could there be some conflict with something left over from sbackup?

Hello,

did you uninstalled the previous NSsbackup installation before the installation using Synaptic?

You could do the following:

1. uninstall NSsbackup using Synaptic
2. uninstall using `% sudo make uninstall` from your source directory
3. you should now have a clean machine without any NSsbackup
4. walk into the /tmp directory and remove the directory /tmp/nssbackup (this is only for temporary data and will be created again later, but there is a known issue so please don't skip this step)
5. re-install NSsbackup using Synaptic
6. launch the configuration tool from the menu `Applications->Utilities` (as non-privileged user)
7. set up the default profile to perform a minimal backup of some files from your /home directory
8. take care to choose a target you have write permissions in (e.g. a directory in your (/home directory created for this purpose)
9. do a backup and check the log files that were copied

hopefully this works, tell your results.

Regards. Jean-Peer

OK, I'll give that a try and let you know. Won't be able to get to it until later today.

Thanks for your help,

Ok, I have mixed results with this, but it's basically the same. There's something wrong with the profiles, I think.

When I started from Applications->Utilities, I could back up stuff in my home directory, to my home directory. It started with a blank bunch of profiles.

However, when I start the program from Administration->nssbackup configuration, it pulled up my old profile list. I can do a backup one of the configs I create, but no other config. It starts, then stops immediately on the other configs.

I have to run from admin, as these are of group 'nobody' and user 'noone'

Ok, so obviously NSsbackup works so far. I did not understand exactly what you meant by

>I can do a backup one of the configs I create, but no other config. It starts, then stops immediately on the other configs.

Can you explain this again?

To finally resolve the problem, please try the following:

* run NSsbackup as superuser (from menu Administration->nssbackup configuration)
* open the profile manager and remove all profiles
* unselect all entries (but after removal there shouldn't be left one) and close the profile manager
* you should be back in the configuration window, check whether the current profile is the `Default profile` (it's written in the lower right corner of the window)
* re-configure the default profile to your needs (do not add any profiles at this moment)
* perform a backup using this default profile

Hopefully this works. If so, you can try to add a second profile and configure this.

An important note: At the moment it is not possible to deactivate the default profile. You have to set up a default profile since this is executed each time.

Good luck. Jean-Peer

In my previosu post, I mixed up 'profile' with 'configs'. I apologize for the confusion.

OK, I followed this, and it seems like my default profile is working, at least with a manual backup (backup now).

I removed all the profiles, then set up my default profile with backup of my /home/dave directory and some other files.

After running a 'backup now' with the default profile, I verified it created the directory and files in the default place - all looks good.

I set up 1 profile to back up some more directories, called the profile 'pix'. When I try to do a manual backup with that profile (selecting the profile, then select edit. Then from main screen, select 'backup now') it only does the backup of the main profile.

Is there a way to do a 'backup now' of another profile?

Also, I had the backup profile set up to do a backup at 1AM, then the 'pix' profile do a backup at 4AM. Neither seemed to work, when I checked them this morning.

As with issue 62814, no cron jobs seem to be created to do backups, and neither of my 2 backup profiles (default and 'pix') are doing any kind of backup.
