Is the glance image store stable enough for use yet?

Asked by Lorin Hochstein

We're trying to set up a multinode OpenStack configuration, and had some problems with the S3 image store. Is the glance image store stable enough for use yet? Is it intended to replace S3 as the standard multinode image store?

Hi Lorin!

Regarding stability of Glance, I can say we're more stable than last release, but the proof is in actually using the software. Until we get more people trying us out, it's tough to tell. The latest round of patches to Glance that are currently under review are a series of functional (note: *not* unit) tests that stress the API and registry nodes in Glance for a "normal" set of operations. We'd definitely appreciate you giving Glance a shot, especially with Swift as the backend for Glance.

re: the S3 backend for Glance, it is not ready at all for prime-time. Unlike the filesystem and Swift backends, the S3 backend does not support POST/PUT/DELETE operations and it has barely any unit testing on it, and no functional testing at all.

The S3 backend in Glance was meant as a replacement for nova-objectstore (which isn't multinode, AFAIK...), but as mentioned, it's not ready for primetime yet...

Hope this helps,
jay
