Nova Failover/Redundancy

Asked by Travis W Kiel

I'm having a hard time finding any information on nova failover options. To use Eucalyptus as an example, they charge $25,000 for their clustered controller solution. What does Nova provide?

Hi, the ultimate solution of HA is not necessarily bound to the applications direct handling of it. Things like Heartbeat/Pacemaker and the lInux HA project can make anything HA as long as the architecture of the application permits. The question you seek is: How conducive to clustering is Nova?

On a another note: Have you seen the Eucalyptus Cluster Solution? It is NOT HA in any sense of the word, you cant even stop and restart certain components without your cloud failing. Eucalyptus is a prime example of something not architected with HA (nor scalability) in mind, this is stated clearly by their CEO.. google is your friend there.

Aimon

Yes, Eucalypus is another beast entirely, and as such its cluster controller is not a simple heartbeat setup, requiring the HA addon for $25,000 to provide some application level controller (only) redundancy; yes I have tested Euca and I have had conversations with them many times, so no need for google on that one.

I believe it is pretty obvious what I am getting at here, but I appreciate your response even if I dont need to be educated on how to ask questions or what HA is.

Openstack is stated to provide HA features. Im simply asking if this functionality is app level, heartbeat, etc. Any specifics. I could also reword that as "How conducive to clustering is Nova".

Hi Travis, all too often apples and oranges are compared. Good to hear you are an educated cloud user. I am also very interested in the question you ask. Some pointing to the architecture docs form the devs may the answer we seek... not sure if those docs exist in that depth yet though.
