Jupiter's GRS transit times

Asked by Tomasz Lewicki

I'm curious if Nightshade calculates Jupiter's Great Red Spot transit times and simulates the view? I checked few transits, set the date and couldn't see GRS in center of Jupiter's disk.

Nightshade does not simulate the exact position or appearance of Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

Hi Tomasz,

The GRS position fluctuates with time.
There's no real equation for this available anywhere.
That's why you have to reset it manually to do ephemeris due to the rotation of the planet.

You have to change it in the ssystem.ini file.

rot_rotation_offset = 250 #just some value good for GRS #old:151

I noticed that last year, the good value was close to 180.

They talk about 182 now.

See pictures precisely dated and calibrate the longitude with the good one.
Not that difficult to be accurate. :-)

Thanks you both Rob and Lionel. Especially for Lionel for clear explanation.

Lionel wrote about modyfing ssystem.ini file. Is it possible to change this file directly on Digitarium or only in community version?

We will update the default GRS location.

You could load your own Jupiter with a script and overlay the existing
one in the short term.

Thank you, Rob, I'll look forward for updates and will try to set up "copy" of Jupiter.
