extra star catalogues

Asked by Ryszard Gabryszewski

Hi !

I cannot find the way to include extra catalogues with stars. In Stellarium we can easily include additional catalogues with stars: http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Stars . Is there such a possiblity for Nightshade ?

Ryszard

Currently Nightshade does not support additional star catalogs beyond the Hipparcos catalog.

And are there any plans (a roadmap ?) to include stars from the catalogues used by Stellarium (or any other catalogues) ?

Best regards,
Ryszard

We do have plans to add larger catalogs, but I do not have a timetable at the moment. We are working on a development roadmap.

What would you like to see for additional catalogs and how do you want to use them?

Thank's for the answer. Well, the much larger number of stars is needed when you want to show a voyage through space. You can pick a star (the best option - in the Milky Way) and change the FOV parameter to the very low value together with wait duration command. As an effect you will get a very nice fly through the space passing lots of stars. Unfortunately this effect is very poor when you have low number of stars (to about 9.5 mag in Nightshade as I noticed).

By the way, why did you choose the Hipparcos catalogue ? It was famous for its very high precision of astrometry but It also contains the lowest number of stars (~118 000). IMHO such high accuracy is not very important when you display star positions on the screen or dome. Even old SAO and PPM catalogues have larger populations of stars included. The best way would be the use of Tycho-2 catalogue which includes ~ 2.5 M of stars.

As I noticed, Nightshade is based on Stellarium which was able to include extra star catalogues. Could you consider to restore the possibility of inclusions of these catalogues ? It can be very useful for shows in a dome.

Ryszard

Nightshade was branched before the additional catalogs feature was added to Stellarium.

We do want to add larger catalogs, but we will probably add the ability to truly fly to other stars first. Just a guess, but that will impact how we implement the catalogs.
