Niceeepc and desktop environments

Asked by Axios

Hi,

just a small, nice question: is it possible (or will it be possible with incoming 1.3 version) to have this wondrous script made able to interact also with other "flavours" of Ubuntu? Such as Xubuntu and, maybe, also Kubuntu?

I have tried a bit with latest version of Xubuntu (based on 4.01 Hardy), typical fresh install, and tried to apply the script, but many things appear to be misplaced....

I mean: obviously the files and setting related to gnome and such are in different places or non exist.... is there anything which can be done about this?

Actually I have some problems with windows placements and cursor and scrolling with "Normal" version of Ubuntu and I really liked the lightweight and simplicity of Xfce.... is it possible???

Thanks! :)

I asked that because I found some disturbing behaviour using latest Ubuntu + Niceeepc: some windows (= "awn manager" and "advanced desktop settings") give me problems...

Whenever I open those windows and I try to move them or resize them (also using alt + left button + mouse movement) it always ends up in not being able to use the content of those windows: I click on chek boxes and/or controls and button within those windows, but I cannot use the controls I am clicking, but instead the windows itself moves and scrolls, and have other strange behaviours.....

Any Clue? It ALWAYS ends up this way... no matter what I do or not do... I install fresh ubuntu, I apply Niceeepc, but I ALWAYS have problems with some large windows...

Hi there, try to switch off Compiz via setting System > Settings > Erscheinungsbild > Visual Effects to "No".

Alredy tried :)

It worked a bit, and also helped to have AWN not installed....

But my main question still exists: I think that niceeepc should be made compatible also with other "flavours" of Ubuntu (xubuntu, kubuntu...) ;)

Hi there, main developer here :P
Sorry, I didn't subscribe myself to the "answers" feature (I don't know how to do it to "All answers" and not to specific ones).

So, NiceeePC will be considering Xubuntu and Kubuntu?

Short answer: No, I don't think so.
Long answer: There is a lot of fixes for Gnome. They're also eeePC version specific fixes. So, If you want distribution specific fixes you will have a lot of possible combinations for the script. And I'm not thinking in the maintenance of this huge piece of software. Maybe, if some other programmer want to collaborate building modules for this distributions, I could structure the script. Anyway, this is not a planned feature.

Next topic:
"but I cannot use the controls I am clicking, but instead the windows itself moves and scrolls, and have other strange behaviours....."

Yes, this bug is totally normal. It happens when a windows is bigger than the screen (with Geany IDE it happens too). You can use that windows by maximizing them : Alt+F11 (NiceeePC feature).

Cheers.

Havok-
