Compositing disabled, "solutions" found don't work

Asked by Jenna S

Hi,

I'm installing netflix-desktop on a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. I've followed these instructions:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ehoover/compholio
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install netflix-desktop

but when I go to start the app, I get the "Compositing is not available, please enable compositing support and relaunch Netflix Desktop" notification. I'm not using an experimental driver. Running rm -Rf ~/.wine-browser and ~/.netflix-desktop and restarting netflix-desktop doesn't change anything. Running netflix-desktop --showdebug results in

Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)

My drivers are

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Whistler [Radeon HD 6730M/6770M/7690M XT]

Any help you can give would be welcome. Thanks!

This looks like a driver problem, could you please try the solution suggested in this "Ask Ubuntu" question?:

The second link in that answer worked for me. Running like a charm right now. Thanks!

Glad I could help, let me know if you have any more trouble!

For future reference (in case that page gets changed), the second link is instructions for installing the proprietary ATI/AMD driver:
