Silverlight 5.1 Plugin Crash on Ubuntu 13.10

Asked by Ahmed

Netflix Desktop was working perfectly for me before upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10. I get a Silverlight plugin crash message. I have been reading that Silverlight is only supported for version 4, but I see that the package installation for your files includes version 5.1 so I am confused as to why you would include that if it is not supported. I tried different methods including enabling version 4 but nothing has worked for me.

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks to the pipelight guys finding some more bugs in Wine we can run Netflix with Silverlight 5.0 and 5.1 now. By default Netflix now uses Silverlight 5.1, since it appears to provide smoother streaming and work more consistently. If you would like to try launching with a different version of Silverlight just run:
sudo apt-get install wine-silverlight4-installer
then launch the application like so:
DEPENDENCIES="wine-silverlight4-installer" wine-browser

I tried your suggestion. After I downgraded from Silverlight 5.1 to 4 then entered "DEPENDENCIES="wine-silverlight4-installer" wine-browser" this is what I got.

The first 2 lines repeated about 1000 times. I omitted all that...

Hi,

I have no idea why it crashes and also the debug output doesn't contain any obvious error message. Can anyone of you please send again a full debug log (as attachment or external link, if it is too big)?

I would like to know if the same error also occurs when using netflix-desktop/wine-browser in combination with pipelight. Could you please try the following steps to install pipelight-multi:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mqchael/pipelight
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pipelight-multi

Then test again, and check if it still crashes. It should probably change something, because a completely different code is used (only the Silverlight plugin is executed via wine, but the native browser is used). Don't worry, when installing pipelight-multi it will have NO EFFECT to any other installed browser on the system.
When it doesn't change anything you can uninstall pipelight-multi again with:

sudo apt-get remove pipelight-multi

Ok, I installed piplight as suggested following <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/08/pipelight-use-silverlight-in-your-linux.html/">these instructions</a> .

I get the following error when I try to use Netflix through Chromium browser.

Program error: problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine.

I get this error when attepting Netflix through Firefox...

Instant Watching System Compatibility
Complete System Requirements

To watch instantly, you''ll need a computer that meets the following minimum requirements:

    Windows
        Windows Vista or Windows 7
Internet Explorer 8 or higher; or the latest version of Firefox; or the latest version of Chrome
        1.2 GHz processor
        512 MB RAM
    Mac
An Intel-based Mac with OS 10.4.11 or later
Safari 4 or higher; or the latest version of Firefox; or the latest version of Chrome
        1 GB RAM
    Chrome OS
A Google Chromebook or Chromebox running Chrome OS 20 or higher
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In both cases I can login to Netflix just fine and view everything. It is only when I hit "play" that it crashes.
Also, in both cases I tested silverlight via this test page, - <a href="http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html/">Bubbles</a> - Both browsers pass this test.

Hi,

what I meant originally was NOT installing the full pipelight, but just pipelight-multi with the instructions above, and run netflix-desktop with the same command/desktop icon as usual. Netflix-Desktop contains a detection of pipelight-multi, and will use the libraries if available (without having to enable the Silverlight plugin for any native browser). The installation instructions above are complete and no additional steps are required for this test.

Nevertheless your debug output shows that the same issue also occurs when using pipelight.

I would still like to see a full debug log recorded for example with:

wine-browser --showdebug &> ~/winebrowser.log

The debug output is then saved as winebrowser.log in the home directory.

Sebastian

Ok Sebastian, firstly I'd like to thank you for your time and effort
helping me out with this. I really appreciate it.
Secondly, I went back and performed the pipelight-multi install and tested
it as you originally suggested. Still to no avail. I have 2 bug logs to
share. One is from that popped up when Netflix was trying to play and
crashed and the other is the wine browser log you requested.

Hi,

@Ken P.: I don't think that its related to the main problem, but it looks a bit weird that the Silverlight plugin is loaded so often. Do you probably have multiple versions of pipelight installed or some files remaining from previous compilation attempts? Please run the following commands to get rid of all additional libraries:

sudo pipelight-plugin --disable-all
sudo rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libpipelight.so
pipelight-plugin --disable-all

(If you decide to use the pipelight-multi package without netflix-desktop later, you can just re-enable silverlight)

Can you please check if the problem is related to hw-acceleration?
Just try to run wine-browser with the following command line options:

wine-browser --disable-hw-acceleration
wine-browser --no-pipelight --disable-hw-acceleration

Does it still crash then?

Sebastian

Entered the commands and success!! Sort of.
When I enter either wine-browser command it automatically starts netflix
and I can watch movies. However, when I try to open the Netflix app itself
I get the same problem. Must be something with the hardware acceleration
then?

Sebastian,

Same for me! The hardware acceleration command worked! The app itself still doesn't, just like with Ken. This will have to do for now, but is there a way to make this command a shortcut, as in an icon for convenience?

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi,

well, its kind of confusing that its really related to the GPU acceleration, as netflix-desktop and pipelight theoretically should both work for both Nvidia and Intel graphic cards (and thus its enabled by default if such a graphic card is detected).

The following messages are also a bit weird:
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/tls/i915_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/i915_dri.so

Which suggests that no 32bit graphic card driver is installed. One method to get rid of this error would probably be to install a correct one (but how to do this depends on which drivers you're using exactly).

I don't know a perfect solution for this (@Erich E. Hoover: is there a way to disable it via config file? I don't think so), but as a temporary workaround you can use:

sudo mv /usr/share/wine-browser-installer/hw-accel-default /usr/share/wine-browser-installer/hw-accel-default2
echo -e '#!/bin/sh\nexit 1;' | sudo tee /usr/share/wine-browser-installer/hw-accel-default
sudo chmod +x /usr/share/wine-browser-installer/hw-accel-default

This way hw-acceleration will not be used anymore and the problem shouldn't occur anymore (until the next netflix-desktop update) when you start netflix-desktop (or other services) via a shortcut.

OK, I'll try it. Should I just enter all that in at once?

Hi Ahmed,

just enter one line after each other. As these commands require admin rights you will be asked to the password.
Unfortunately launchpad shows the lines a bit messed up (additional linebreaks inbetween), I've thus copied it to pastebin:

Sebastian,

Entered the 3 seperate commands and it seems to be a decent workaround. I noticed that netflix operates better in fullscreen mode. If I dont have a maximized window when I start a movie I get the silverlight crash again but I can still use netflix if I reload the page 2 or 3 times. In any event, I'm further ahead than I was before thanks to you. I can watch netflix! Thanks a lot!!

Ken can you specify the three commands entered.

I have my firefox 28 crashing upon launching under wine unless it is launched by netflix-desktop and then it is crashing upon clicking play. The cursor changes to little hand with the finger pointing and the screen goes black.

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.

Where is that technical information then??

Here is the return email I presume it might be the crash report number in it, but they idiot protect the responses so I can't access their site without using firefox.

The slackner post #15 on 2013-10-21 above allowed me to fix my problem. netflix-desktop worked fine on Linux Mint 15 - 32 bit. An identical machine with Linux Mint 16 - 64 bit failed (nvidia binary driver/module; HDMI connection on both). I would get audio and the web browser window would freeze with a sheared/shreaded display of the desktop wallpaper or the last web page displayed. NOTE: I installed pipelight on the 64 bit Mint machine in an attempted fix before attempting disabling hardware acceleration as described in post #15 (which fixed Netflix for me).

This is a slight hijack of this thread, but I hope someone might be helped by this post. If there is further discussion, perhaps it could be moved to a different thread. My thanks to ehoover/sslackner et. al.
