remove favorites menu

How do i remove the favorites menu in the netbook interface?
I tried removing it from /usr/share/desktop-directories
but then it wouldnt start at all.
So i tried to edit the file to say something else but then after editing it wont start unless i restore the origional file.
I REALLY need to get rid of that heart icon.......If i could change that damn heart to something else, i would be content. but when i edit the file in /usr/share/desktop-directories the launcher wont start.
PLEASE HELP
