No Sound from Ubuntu 8.04 on an Atom D945GCLF board

Asked by Paul Snow

I am pretty new to Linux ... Trying to break the Windows habit...

The behavior is rather odd. I configured the system the day before without hooking up any speakers. Then I hooked up the speakers, and I get nothing. Volume seems to be fine, the integrated hardware seems to be in the device lists, nothing is muted.

So I plug in my usb Plantronics head set. I didn't expect that to work, but low and behold it seems to work fine *in some ways*. (That is to say, when I plug in the head set, a glorious musical chord is played through the headset, and in audacity I can see the levels bounce as I record my speech.... but still no sound.)

But as far as playing sound, other than that first chord, no other sound is played either through the built in sound on the board, nor through the headset. The devices show up in various lists of audio devices (in Audacity, skype, /dev, etc.)

What do I do?

Update

It would seem that the Skype Install for Linux doesn't have any default sounds. But when I tried the test call, the sound worked just fine.

So what is failing then is the built in sound for the D945GCLF board....

Update

Not sure what I did, but I rebooted (thinking I'd update the BIOS) and suddenly the sound started working....

I had updated the alsa drivers ...

I had tried several suggestions on the web I had found....

Anyway, I guess it is just fine now.
