Why can't you switch desktop modes in lucid?

I can only see the desktop switcher application has been deprecated, is there a new way to do this in lucid.

The other trick (karmic) with removing the icon on the top left is blocked in lucid, also I don't really want to
remove anything. I just want to use the normal desktop until the development on the gma500 drivers supports
the launcher menu and then switch back
