side pane disappeared and won't come back

Asked by Gilles Pietri

For a reason, my side pane disappeared in nautilus (I don't remember exactly when, or if I had it go away by myself), and I can't figure how to bring it back. The help contents tells me to use "View > Side pane", but I don't have such an option. Besides, I can't add a bookmark (a Signet, in French) in nautilus, though I can manage the existing ones, it may be linked ...

I'm using gnome 2.16, nautilus is 2.16.1, and I'm running Xgl / beryl. I don't want to report a bug because I may be looking in the wrong place... Help would be appreciated ;)

Discard the silly possibility: has the side pane been resized to zero width? It should be possible to drag it back into a sensible state if it has :)

The menu option appears on my Xorg/Nautilus 2.16.1/Edgy system. Try pressing F9: that is what appears as the shortcut for the option on my machine.

If that doesn't work, could you list out the options you *do* see in your Nautilus's view window? Thanks.

Thanks for your answer !

The side pane is really gone, I don't have any handle to set its size, not that obvious so, too bad !

In beryl, F9 activates the scaler by default, so I loaded back metacity to test, and F9 does not do anything.

As for the options I see in the View menu (translated from the French menu, so it may not be accurate) :
Stop, Refresh, Back to the default viewing values (does nothing), Sort (submenu), Sort by name, 3 zoom options, see as icons, see as a list.

OK, I don't know why I haven't found it the first time I googled for this issue, but http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-22182.html answered my question. Quite weird and not natural, but however, it works... Maybe Q&A team should get attention on this usability issue ;)
