Upgrade to Alpha 4

Asked by Derek Christensen

Will "apt-get install mythtv" get me from Alpha 3 to Alpha 4 or do I need to grab some other packages?

Thanks,
Derek

they just released alpha 4
if it needs more files it will download them, don't worry

I have looked at the website, rather extensively, and upgrading from one alpha to another is not mentioned. I thought maybe there was a 'mythbuntu' metapackage, but couldn't find one, which is why I asked the question.

Here is what I found:

"apt-get install mythtv" only upgrades mythtv, as I expected. I also tried an a dist-upgrade and it only upgrades previously installed packages, also as expected.

So I've manually installed the mythbuntu-control-centre and mythstream packages by hand. I believe those are the only two additional packages needed, but an not completely certain.

Thanks,
Derek

Derek,

Indeed this is something not touched upon on the website.
Unfortunately, an upgrade from Alpha 3 to 4 may be a little more
involved then you would like to hope. There have been multiple drastic
changes that aren't representable within a package, but are instead
performed at install time. At least one item hasn't cleared the Ubuntu
archive, so I'll try to summarize what you would need to do.

1) Remove the mythbuntu.org mirror from your /etc/apt/sources.list
2) Add the mythbuntu gutsy PPA
4) apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
3) Install mythbuntu-control-centre and mythbuntu-desktop mythstream
4) Login to the admin session, and start mythbuntu-control-centre.
Change the login user to be your username.

Gutsy PPA is:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/ubuntu gutsy restricted main
universe multiverse

Hopefully no more large (unrepresentable) changes pop up before the
final release, but I can't predict for sure.

Good luck with getting things upgraded :)

Thanks Mario.

I updated my sources a couple of weeks ago, so all was good there. I've done everything else, in fact I installed mythstream from the control center...very nice!

The only issue I have is that the auto login change won't stick. However, I've got all the Alpha 4 functionality, and I'm planning on doing a rebuild once the stable release hits, so I can wait on that.

Thanks for your help,
Derek

Mario's response solved my problem, however there is not a button to assign the solution to his response.

Thanks.

Derek,

Can you file a bug against mythbuntu and attach all /etc/gdm/*conf* files? Also, explain a little better what is going on with automatic login.

Thanks
