Why moovida depends on HAL ?

Asked by Id2ndR

I've installed moovida on my nettop running lucid and it added hal as a dependency.
I'd like to know where hal is used in moovida and if there is plan to remove this dependency soon.

HAL is used to detect when new volumes (DVD, CD, removable disks) are inserted and act accordingly. It is a strong dependency of the moovida-plugins-good package, and no, there is no plan to remove it.

Out of curiosity, what is your use case that excludes HAL?

Sorry for not noticing the question earlier, I'm closing bug #549471 that's redundant.

@Olivier: I think what triggers that question is that HAL is getting deprecated, and I guess, not in the default install of Lucid any more (see http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal )

Right, I didn't remember that one. Even though it's not in the default install, HAL is still available in Lucid, so there is no blocker on this side, but the transition to DeviceKit should definitely be considered.

Yes that's exactly the point:
- HAL is removed by defaut from Lucid, and is going to be depreciated
- HAL slows each boot for about 2 seconds whereas I just need it because of Moovida

Thanks for you answer.
