serious scheduling problem

Asked by murrayjames

Hello,

I'm having a rather worrying scheduling problem.

I recently installed Timothy Bourke's excellent Stat Bar plugin. This one:

http://www.mnemosyne-proj.org/node/172

The problem is that it shows "Days Until Next Repetition" as 0/6/6/6/6. I've confirmed that this is happening. For any card, whether I grade it 2-5, and regardless of my history on the item, it will set the next review 5, 6, or 7 days in the future. This is a big problem, as I'll grade something a 2, and won't see it for a week.

Troubleshooting: I deleted the plugin, but I still had this problem. Then restored the plugin; the problem was still there. I haven't uninstalled Mnemosyne yet. If you suggest it I can do this.

So far as I can tell, this is a new problem, although I wasn't checking the scheduling of my previous cards before. I wonder if the problem is plugin related. I also have Alternative Zero, White on Black, Pinyin, and Fast Format installed--maybe my plugins are interfering with each other.

I can't benefit from this SRS if the scheduling is busted. Any ideas?

Update: I deleted all my plugins to see what would happen; the problem persists.

Update: Just some information: Yesterday was the first time I didn't do any reviews all day. I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

UPDATE 3: [Sorry for all the updates.] Ok, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but not before exporting my data twice, once preserving my learning data and once without. After re-installation I imported my cards. When I imported the cards w/o learning data, everything was fine. I even restored my plugins, and it all looks great. The spread is what I'd expect for new data: 0/1/3/4/5. But when I imported the cards *with* my learning data, the problem remained. Everything was 0/6/6/6/6.

Does this mean my data is corrupted? Would going back to an automatic backup help, and how do I do that? I'd hate to lose all my learning data.

First of all, make sure you have the latest version installed. Then, uninstall completely, reinstall and test with a new database you create from scratch. If that works OK, it's the plugins that are to blame, and I would suggest posting to the mailing list instead where you can reach the plugin authors. (I'm not able to support third party plugins obviously).

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your quick reply. I did a clean install, no plugins, and am still getting some weird behavior.

I made a new database, three questions. Initially I graded them all differently: 1, 3, 5. Then I clicked to learn ahead of schedule and graded them all 4. They were reset to review in 1 day.

I read on the FAQ that grading an item 5 repeatedly will soon project it far into the future. I can't seem to do this. I'll grade it 5 over and over again, and it will slowly creep forward. If I grade an item anything else (2-4), the period goes back down very rapidly. Is "learn ahead of schedule" supposed to simulate a new day of studying? If so, the scheduling is not working for me. Also, is a grade of 5 the only grade that increases the length of time between reviews? Grades 2-4 are keeping my reviews

I wasn't aware of the Mnemosyne mailing list. I can repost my question there if it would be better suited.

Thank you.

The behaviour is a expected. Learn ahead of scheduling is supposed to be used sparingly, not structurally.

I also don't see the problem with grade 5. It results in longer intervals than grades 3 and 4, just as you reported...

If you have cards that you know already very well, then perhaps it's just not worth putting these into Mnemosyne.

Peter,

I woke up this morning and things are working fine. I'll stay away from "Learn Ahead" and the Stat Plugin, which was indeed causing some weird behavior in 1.2.2.

Thanks again,
