Removing unnecessary files from NLO gridpack

Asked by Josh McFayden

Dear MG5_aMC experts,

In ATLAS we are struggling to use some very large NLO "gridpacks" (tarballs of the process directories). An example is here:
http://mcfayden.web.cern.ch/mcfayden/public/mc_13TeV.MGPy8EG_FRVZ_2zd_VBF_mzd400_MJJ750.GRID.tar.gz

From a quick look it seems to me that the majority of the size comes from the object, binary and log files in the subprocess directories. Specifically, the files called “*.o”, “madevent" and "gensym” take up ~70% of the total size of the gridpack, the "*log*" files take up ~20%.

Can you tell us which (if any) of these we can be removed without affecting the generation of events?

Best,

Josh

Hi Josh,

All the *.o files can be removed. Most of the source files as well. The gensym might be removed, depending on how you use the gridpack, I think. There shouldn't be any madevent files (although there should be madevent_mintMC files, which cannot be removed). Log files can be removed as well.

There's probably quite a bit of fine-tuning that can be done. I would suggest you generate a simple process and do some testing yourself -- I think you know better how you want to use these gridpacks than we do from the MadGraph side.

Sorry for not being much more helpful here...

Best,
Rikkert
