very small cross section

Asked by ahh

Dear Author,

I have a process with total cross section 1.00E-35 pb. MadGraph takes days to generate the events.
I asked to generate 10K events but it generates only 9 events !!

Is there any way to accelerate the calculation and get more events?

Thanks

Hi,

Since you do not provide any details on what you are trying to do. I do not have any idea of what the problem is.

So for speed point of view, you should try the following FAQ: https://answers.launchpad.net/mg5amcnlo/+faq/2312

For the low number of event, this typically means either a integration issue (due to too strong cut?) and/or a a divergency of the matrix-element which is not cut by the cut (i.e. too soft cut)

Cheers,

Olivier

Dear prof,

I have generated the following process by using Madgraph for a certain
extension of the SM:

generate p p > zp, (zp > s1 s2, s2 > s1 z, z > l+ l-)

After that I have tried to generate 10000 events for this process but this
takes long time (couple of days). I think this because the total decay
width of s2 is very small (~10^-29 GeV). Is it right? If yes, could you
please tell me how I can overcome this problem

Thank you,

Hi,

I would advise to increase the width to a much bigger value. Something of the order of the mass times 1e-8.
This will obviously impact your cross-section, but you can use the Narrow width approximation to correct for this effect.

You technically also have some change in the s2 invariant mass but the width that you are going to use is anyway too small for such effect to matter.

Cheers,

Olivier

Iam looking for displaced vertex and 1e-8 will not be sufficient, aim not
so curios about the cross section but the total width. is there any way to
correct the total width if i set it to 1e-8 ?

Thanks in advance for you help

Hi,

The displace vertex treatment at this level is actually very basic.
(It is just a function of the width which predicts the “distance”)
So the easiest is probably to do it yourself.

Otherwise, what you can do is
1) generate with a width of 1e-8 (without asking for a displaced vertex)
2) modify by hand the lhe file and set the width to the value that you want.
3) run ./bin/madevent
4) type "add_time_of_flight run_01 —threshold=XX”

Cheers,

Olivier

Hello Prof,

Thanks a lot for your help, indeed helps.

but during the mad event command i got the following error :
Command "add_time_of_flight run_01 --threshold=100" interrupted with error:
KeyError : 'id (2,) is not in decay'

As well i attach the log file.

Thank you in advance

Hi,

For this to work, you need to have ALL particle defined in your model to have a width in your param_card.dat
Looks like you are missing some.
(Likely also that you are using an old version of the code, since recent version should automatically add such value)

Cheers,

Olivier

Hello Prof,
Sorry for asking a lot,
Indeed i revised my param_card.dat many times and i found it ideal and
every thing is defined !!
Here i attach it.

Many thanks

Hi,

You did not attach file (actually they are no way to attach file)
But did you try to use the latest version of the code?
I know that I already fixed such issue (it might be in the development version but I think that such fix is already released)

Cheers,

Olivier

Many thanks,
Every thing is okay with the latest version, but please let me notify you
that in file bin/internal/madevent_interface.py "import shutil " is

Many thanks

Dear prof Olivier,
Iam want to study the kinematic of the Higgs boson at rest frame and i want
to do this in MadGraph.
thus i consider only the gluon gluon fusion and i turned off the pdf
function as well i set the centre of mass energy to be = 125 GeV.
i entered the process as generate g g > h , h > all its decay channels
Does this sufficient ?

Many thanks
