Pythia 8.2 won't read entire e+e- LHE from MG4/MG5

Asked by Reggie Bain

Hello authors,

I am trying to shower e+e->bb~ events at E_cm = 400 GeV generated in MG5(v2.3.0) (or in MG4 for that matter) and shower them with Pythia 8.2 (8.219). I have tried a number of variations of processes...all with the default run_card.dat parameters including e+e->uu~, l+l->bb~, etc. Pythia take the LHE file as input...however spits out so many abort messages (usually processLevel aborts...meaning that it can't somehow interpret the input hard process) that it generally reads only 10-25% of the events in the LHE file before crashing due to too many aborts.

I WAS able to get Pythia 8.2 to read an entire LHE file of pp>tt~ events without any problems. I can provide my LHE file as well as Pythia output...where it shows which events fail at the process level and which pass. NOTE: I AM able to, without any difficulties/aborts, read and shower on these same LHE files in older versions of Pythia...for ex. Pythia 8.185.

I also notice that Pythia (regardless of version) after showering reconstructs radically different numbers of 2 and 3 jet events for the e+e->bb~ events previously mentioned based on whether the events were created in MG4 or MG5. This also is confusing to me...since Pythia should only see a bunch of back to back b/b~ quarks in both cases.

Are these known problems? What difficulties could it be having with e+e- collisions...or is this perhaps some other issue?

Thank you!

Reggie

Dear Reggie,

would you be email to send to my email, the following file:
1) the event file (both for MG4/MG5)
2) the pythia error file.
I'm working up to Sunday with a pythia author so it might be interesting to have those quickly such that I can look at this problem with one of the pythia author. (especially since this sounds like a pythia problem)

Cheers,

Olivier
