External LHE file not working with Pythia

Asked by Sarah Malik

Hi,

I'm trying to run an external LHE file produced with POWHEG through the pythia+delphes framework in Madgraph (v 5.1.5.15). I copy the LHE file to a run_01 directory and rename it unweighted_events.lhe and then gzip it.
Then I run pythia on it but get the following error:
At line 148 of file ME2pythia.f
Fortran runtime error: Bad integer for item 1 in list input
1

I think its not able to read the LHE file. When I run over an LHE file produced by Madgraph then everything works fine.
The LHE file from POWHEG that I'm trying to run over is below. Any suggestions on what the problem might be and how I can modify the LHE file so its readable?

Thanks
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I never try that.
The problem is that you don't have the information in the lhe file that MG use in order to run pythia.
You need to add the run_card (with the correct tag) in the banner in order to have the translation of some MG parameter
correctly passed to pythia (like if we have to run matching,…)

Cheers,

Olivier

Hi Olivier,

Thanks very much for your response, it fixed that particular problem I was using.
However, now I seem to be having issues with LHAPDF. I get the following error when running on Pythia with a PDF set other than CTEQ6l (and some others). I had a look through previous questions regarding this issue and I think this may be due to Pythia having its own version of LHAPDF and its using the PDFsets that are in there (MSTW08 isn't one of them and this is what I'm trying to run with). I believe one of the answers suggested in the past was to link pythia with the correct LHAPDF, but any ideas how I do that? Do I have to modify the makefile in pythia-pgs/src/makefile?

    MSTP(98) changed from 0 to 1
==== PYTHIA WILL USE LHAPDF ====
WRONG LHAPDF set number = 21100 given! STOP EXE!

Thanks!
Sarah

Sorry, I have no idea how to do that.

Cheers,

Olivier

Hi Olivier,

Ok, one of the threads I found which I think refers to the same issue I'm having is:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/madgraph5/+bug/1169027
I'll try the suggestion you made (https://bugs.launchpad.net/madgraph5/+bug/1169027/comments/4) and see if it works.

Thanks
Sarah
