mlm matching and cuts on leptons

Asked by Wojciech Kotlarski

I would like to know whether you can put cuts on leptons in the final state while doing MLM matching. For example, does requiring that lepton from W boson in W+jets samples have pT > sth and some eta < that sth spoil the matching procedure? Thank you for your answer.

Hello Wojciech,

There is no problem setting pt or eta cuts on the lepton in the presence of matching. Just note that
- dR(jet, lepton) cuts are ignored if you use xqcut > 0, since such cuts do ruin the matching
- if you use a hard pt cut on the lepton, you will not get any events from the 0-jet sample (since the W has no pt in that sample, so the pt of the lepton is restricted by mW/2 plus width effects)
- make sure to make your lepton cut lower than what you need in your detector level analysis, since the shower can boost the event by up to O(QCUT).

All the best,
Johan
