Medibuntu on 9.04

Asked by PLogic

First attempt using Terminal commands under Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty
Jackalope"
I've been trying to get a Samsung BluRay DVD player to work on ubuntu machines since migration from Windows at the beginning of the year. While I got a DVD player to work on 8.10 following the prompts in the "help" menu recently, I've had no luck with my Samsung BluRay player on either system. I was directed to Medibuntu yesterday and attempted the commands that appear on that Website with no success:

1st attempt: I typed the commands for Ubuntu 9.04 into Terminal.

the response ended in "...2009-06-04 18:07:02 Error 404: Not Found."

So I resorted to the commands that appear under Any Ubuntu Release and keyring:

early in the lengthy response was noted "...connected. HTTP request
sent, awaiting response......404 Not Found.

Later in the response, regarding medibuntu-keyring "...couldn't find
package'

After running thru all that, several times, I inserted a DVD in the
player, opened it using MPlayer, which requested a search for required
plugins, which I did. The response was: "search for suitable
plugins...No packages with requested plugins found". Specifically, it
wants "DVD Source"

What's the exact URL of the instructions you were trying to follow?

The 404 error you got was probably the result of mistyping the wget command. You may have better luck if you copy and paste instead of trying to retype them.

Tried again pasting either command string and restarting application and PC in between. No Joy! Net results: it still can't find plugins and wants a "DVD Source". Here's a terminal printout:

It appears all of the commands executed correctly, but all you asked it to do was upgrade already-installed packages based on newer versions found in the medibuntu repository. It's possible that one of the medibuntu repository's upgraded packages has additional requirements for packages that you don't have installed yet. If that's the case, the installer will look for the packages from the "best" source it knows about.

Usually when a CD is asked for on install, that means that it believes you have your install medium handy. If you installed from DVD, then the same may apply here.

In that case, open "Software Sources" (under System, Administration, I believe), find the source for your install medium (presumably a DVD), and uncheck it, then try to install the packages you want again. The update will be forced to go to the online repositories and won't ask for a DVD.

In addition, you may have to install other packages to get what you want. Instead of using apt-get from a command line, you might be more comfortable using Synaptic (under System, Administration), which allows you to manage packages from a graphical interface.

Can you help with this problem?
