Skype and Webcameras - Logitech 5000 Pro

Asked by icykiss

Hello,

My problem begun after plugging in the above usb camera to my pc. It worked from the first instance (tested using luvcview or smt) ---but didnt work with skype (downloaded off skype.com - the deb package) and after a lot of browsing through the net, (skype community / ubuntu forums) - where everyone suggested all kinds of things from driver related things, such as compiling new ones..and confusing staff far away from the reach of a normal user (like me).

Now after all this browsing and reading though...I came across medibuntu...downloaded skype for my version of ubuntu (8.10) ---after uninstalling the existing installation of skype--- installed...and the camera now works.

out of curiosity---why does this version work, but the version from skype.com doesn't ???

Hi,

We added a wrapper around Skype's binary: /usr/bin/skype has been renamed to /usr/bin/skype.real, and /usr/bin/skype is now a wrapper that preloads the libv4l[*] before starting /usr/bin/skype.real. This is really a temporary hack until Skype links against it properly.
