ffmpeg updates from Ubuntu repo break mp3 encoding

Asked by ziptiespec

I've been using the Medibuntu repo for ffmpeg, libavcodec1d, libavformat1d, and libpostproc1d because the versions in Ubuntu's repo cannot encode mp3 audio without some work.

I mistakenly upgraded these packages from Ubuntu's repo today. I finally got them back to the Medibuntu versions and have been reading about using apt to "pin" these packages so that they not get upgraded to the versions from the Ubuntu repo again.

I haven't actually gotten this to work yet but perhaps adding some documentation re: this to the "Repository Howto" page (http://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) would help others that run into this issue.

Hi,

I don't think this is a good idea to add some documentation about apt pinning on the wiki page, because the new ubuntu packages are security fixes (http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-630-1), and I prefer that users have a "secure" ffmpeg version which can't play mp3 for a few days, rather than some vulnerable libs (and also, apt pinning isn't very end-user-friendly for the moment :P).

Anyway, we just uploaded new ffmpeg packages.

Hello Lionel,

Thanks for the reply. I see your point regarding security uber allles. And yes, apt pinning is definitely not very user friendly. I spent a good deal of time playing with it and never got it working correctly. Thankfully your updated ffmpeg packages saved me from continued frustration.

Thanks again and thanks for the awesome work on Medibuntu!
