KPlayer 0.6.1 package

Asked by klaps

Would you be able to add a KPlayer 0.6.1 package in Medibuntu?

KPlayer is a great media player that depends on MPlayer and all the codecs and libdvdcss.

Thank you!

Actually it seems KPlayer mostly uses mplayer as backend, and thus I don't see a particular point which would make it suitable for medibuntu.
Sorry, but I think you should try to add it ot the MOTU/Candidates page on the ubuntu wiki, and maybe try to install from debian-multimedia if there's no incompatibility.
Cheers

Hi Albin:

Well since medibuntu already has packages like kaffeine, amarok, libdvdcss, lavc, lavf and a bunch of others, it would only be logical to have kplayer as well. Most of those packages are needed to run mplayer and kplayer properly anyway.

Also you have the ability to make packages for existing kubuntu versions, and not only futures ones. The debian-multimedia package does not install on edgy because it depends on newer versions of some packages, although I'm sure kplayer would work just as well with edgy versions.

Since you guys seem to be the only ones willing to help with this, please don't reject this request. Please create the package and put it in medibuntu if you can.

Thank you.

There are two sorts of packages in Medibuntu
1/ Non-free packages or free packages with legal issues that are not in ubuntu
2/ Packages that are in ubuntu, but with litigious extensions disabled. They're in Medibuntu because we compile them with those proprietary extensions enabled.

KPlayer does not belong to 1/ nor to 2/, because it uses mplayer as backend. That means, all the actual multimedia parts rely on mplayer. Thus there is no issue of any kind with Kplayer. The only thing you need to do is install the right packages.

If you want to install it, you might want to grab the source package on debian multimedia and build it, using pbuilder for example. As a side note: we do not actually make the new packages available for all the versions, but only the devel versions. We do not add new packages to released versions of ubuntu, but only update them.

If I have some time I'll have a look at it though, maybe it's worth trying to put it in feisty+1
Cheers

Albin
