google earth does not start on gutsy 64bit

Asked by Frank

Googleearth does not start on Kubuntu Gutsy (Tribe4)with the proprietary fglrx driver (tested with version 8.37.8 from the repro and 8.40.4 from amd's website). It hangs on the splash screen without any messages. According to Readme.Debian I replaced the libGl.so.1 but nothing happens. As suggested by Readme.Debian I have also tried to replace the libGL with various versions installed in /usr/lib for both the 32bit and the 64bit versions. The CPU usage climbed up to 90 - 100 % in all cases. Please give me, if necessary, further instruction how to debug it.

Best regards

Frank

Hi,

use the workaround as mentioned in README.Debian:

Here is a possible workaround[1][2]:
$ cd /usr/lib/googleearth/
$ sudo wget http://librarian.launchpad.net/7037027/libGL.so.1 -O libGL.so.1

Best regards,
Whoopie

Hi,
no this workaround doesn't work for me on Gutsy AMD64. But it is true, the misbehaviour comes from libGL.
You could find a workaround for Gutsy 64bit and fglrx 8.40.4 here.
