Tekla keeps disconnecting and reconnecting

Asked by SteveLee

I cannot use Tekla Prototype II at all at the moment as it keeps disconnecting and re connecting every few seconds. I'm using my Dell Streak which we had working before, but after a period of similar problems.

I have latest Teckla software from Android market.

Do you have any ideas. On Tekla green light changes to red flashing and Status on android says disconnect/connected.

This sounds similar to an old bug reported with the Proto-1 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/meadl/+bug/696562) but I am more inclined to say this time that the Dell Streak radio may be causing it this time since it has been stable on other devices (e.g. Droid, Nexus S, Galaxy S) for a while.

Have you managed to get it to work properly again?

We did see a reference to such a bug but I assumed had updated firmware.

I can't try any other Android device. The problem did go away for a while. When I tried last I could not get it to work at all, and didn't get as far as pressing switches as I just gave up.

I do have 2 plugged in via adaptor so wonder if that is an issue. Will try again.

OK so I just tried and it works perfectly! Very frustrating

When I last tried it was at a conference so may have been lots of bluetooth devices. I had the 2 close together though.

I'll close the ticket but we have had the problem twice now.

Arrg it's failing again now and nothing I do will get it working again!

And now it's working again - madness must be intermittent bug. Hope not dry joint

You seem to be close to reproducing it more consistently. Please report what seems to be triggering it and what seems to be fixing it. Hopefully that will help us diagnose it. Thanks for your help and patience!

OK with no switches connected and all set up (no self scan, and Dell kept alive) I tried 10 cycles of power down (USB), wait 30 sec and repower. 4/10 worked

So I don't have a clue, other thank something not being properly initalised

Can you please help me understand your test better by defining the following in more detail?
* What is "Dell kept alive"?
* What is a "cycle of power down (USB)"
* In "4/10", what does the 4 and 10 mean?

Sorry - I was terse as in a rush

* What is "Dell kept alive"?
I made sure the Dell Streak screen did not blank by occasionally touching it

* What is a "cycle of power down (USB)"
I repeated the same cycle of activity 10 times.
  a) pull out USB cable powering the Tekla Shield
  b) wait 30 seconds
  c) reconnect USB cable
  d) wait and see if reconnected (green light) and stayed connected

* In "4/10", what does the 4 and 10 mean?
4 out of the 10 cycles stayed connected for at least 2 min. the other 6 got into the continuous disconnect / reconnect loop every 20 S or so.

I realise this doesn't really help narrow down if problem is the sheild or Streak end. Is there any debug I can do or otherwise get some visibility?

Can you repeat this process but powering off/on the bluetooth radio instead of the Shield? Also, try unpairing/paring. I am pretty sure the radio on the Streak is causing the problem.

I'm afraid it looks like the shield is at fault.

From powering up the shield all was well and a disconnect/connect bluetooth many times with out problem

I then reset the sheild's power twice until it got into failure mode. It then stayed in failure mode through multiple bluetooth off/ons, streak power off/on and unpair/pair

How can I find what build of the shield I have? I shows on the blutooth list as TeklaSheildP2-C03D

At some point (probably early Sept at the TransferSummit) I'll meet up with Julian who also has a Shield and we can do A/B comparisons

I am sorry to hear you are still having problems. There are only two versions of the Shield: Proto 1 and Proto 2. You have the Proto 2.

Also, I thought you had said earlier the Shield was only misbehaving on the Streak, and was working fine on Julian's phone. I highly recommend trying the same Shield with another device just to make sure. Could you get your hands on another device before meeting with Julian?

No, we only tried on 1 other machine and the software kept crashing. I'll double check

Finding another machine might be hard (problem of working from home). I'll ask around see if I can find someone with an Android

FYI Julian says his Tekla is ok with a Nexus.

Is this still an issue? Any luck testing on other devices?

I can confirm I experience similar behaviour using a recently supplied tekla shield (arrived July 2011) and a Google-supplied Nexus One Android phone running 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). When I was in the USA the device worked without apparent issues, however when I returned to the UK I noticed the connection kept cycling every few seconds (say every 5 seconds). I'll provide more details when I perform a more thorough test and once I've downloaded the source for the Bluetooth driver and installed it on one or more of my Android phones.

I am still unable to reproduce this issue but someone else has reported it with an Acer A500 tablet. The inconsistency is puzzling (e.g., sometimes works/not, for Steve it cycles every 20s but for Julian every 5s, etc...), however, it is possible that the bluetooth socket on the handset is timing out before it receives the echo of the ping it sends to the Tekla Shield (which should happen every 4 seconds for up to 5 times before the handset gives up, disconnects from the Shield and automatically tries to reconnect again).

I have changed some parameters of the connection in the hope of avoiding the possibility of the devices closing or timing out the connection after less than 4 seconds of not exchanging any data (new pinging time is 2 seconds). I will distribute an APK to those affected and see if things get better at all.

The new version is looking very good and I have not had a failure yet. I thought I once spotted the Android connection coming back but have not see again.

I have tried multiple unpowering of the shield and it always recovers.
I also to the android out of range and it recovers

It seems you have a long connection fail timeout which I think is fine, though you may have to wait a little while for the failure before it reconnects.

Thanks! Should be good for TransferSummit now.

So far, so good.
I've tested the 0.4.4 beta Bluetooth driver with 3 Android phones: a Nexus One, a Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 and an old Ion *the old Google IO developer phone* where the Bluetooth connection between the Tekla Shield and the respective device has remained stable for hours (12+). I will continue testing with additional devices. To be clear, the Tekla interface works and I can use it as an input device for the Android phones. Good work and thank you Jorge.
