How to use Tekla app with shield?

Asked by Tim Barlott

I have recently received my Tekla shield and finally have a functional Android device (Nexus S) running stock 2.3.
I have downloaded the Tekla app.

I have selected Tekla under keyboard options and selected 'connect to shield'.
Shield is turned on, bluetooth enabled.

States that "no Tekla shields in range".

Any ideas?
Is there a specific way to connect to the shield and the app?

The first thing you need to do is to pair the Shield with the phone.
1. Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth Settings > Scan for devices
2. If the Shield is on, you should see it appear in the "Bluetooth devices" list
3. Select the Shield to pair it with the phone
4. The phone will request a passkey or passcode. Enter "1234"
5. The Shield should now be paired

The process above only has to be done once for every Android device that you wish to connect the Shield to. Once paired, you can do what you did before, that is, go to Tekla keyboard options and select 'connect to shield'. This time the Shield should connect automatically and show you the navigation keyboard.

Sorry, I should had mentioned that I attempted to pair the bluetooth first, but the phone wasn't able to locate the Shield. I then went to connect to shield as previously stated.

Perhaps it is an issue with the shield itself?
I have it turned on, but the lights don't change no matter what position the power switch is in. One green light near the edge and 3 amber lights further in.

Other bluetooth enabled devices that I have (iPhone, Windows Phone 7, Macbook) also don't acknowledge the bluetooth signal from the shield.

The lights on the bottom board shouldn't change since the power switch on the top board only turns the bluetooth modem on/off
Once the Shield is connected to power, there should be a blinking red light on the small red board at the top (ie. the bluetooth modem), if you pulled the boards apart at some point, make sure all the pins match when plugging them back together because sometimes some pins are left out.

Let me know if you see the red blinking light on the top, that would be the first step. The red blinking light means the bluetooth modem is waiting to be discovered.

Ok, we're making headway!

There was no red blinking light on the bluetooth modem. I switched to a different AC power adapter just now and have the red lights. The shield is now discoverable, paired with my phone, and the Tekla app is connected.

Is it normal for the shield to connect and disconnect every 15 or 20 seconds? It reconnects immediately, but does not remain connected continuously.

Is the goal of the perpetual connection/disconnection to keep the device from locking?

By the way, the app (using touch controls) works nicely, great job.
I have been able to access all parts of my Nexus S, haven't tried third party apps yet though...

Would you mind writing your last question (following) separately?

"Is it normal for the shield to connect and disconnect every 15 or 20 seconds? It reconnects immediately, but does not remain connected continuously."

The short asnwer is: it is not normal but I can provide more details once the question is in its own page.

cheers!
