Can I use an old Atari joystick (9 pin) for testing?

Asked by Tim Barlott

I have a couple multi-switches, but nothing with a 9 pin input. Can I use an old Atari joystick with the Tekla shield? It seems like it would act like any other 5 switch joystick with a 9 pin input.

Thanks!

According to the following page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joystick
the Atari joystick is fully compatible with the Tekla Shield, however, only the four directional switches (i.e., the joystick itself) are wired on the Shield. The action button is not wired and will not be functional.

Now that I have the shield working, it is not responding the input from my Atari joystick.

Unfortunately, the only other switches I have use switch port 2 (3.5 jack) which I understand is not setup for use yet.

That is correct, the 3.5 jack is not yet setup for use. The Atari joystick does seem to follow the simple electrical transducer standard (http://trace.wisc.edu/docs/set/set.htm), which would make it compatible with Tekla but we haven't yet tested it, so we cannot tell for sure. I hope you make it work, and if you do, let us know.

Can you help with this problem?
