Me-Tv cannot create a channels.conf file, not detecting channels.

I have just installed a pcHDTV card HD 5500 into my desktop computer. I am trying to get Me-TV to do its initial scan of channels. None are being detected. I am on Bright House cable tv in central florida USA. I split the cable with one end going to my modem which stills work and the other end to the card. I am using a Gigabyte mother board GA-MA78GM-S2H with a integrated graphic card. The card is as follows.

 VGA controller

I tried TVTime in the console which gave this error message.

I removed TvTime as I really want to use Me-Tv .

I am no guru but I think my Kernel is detecting the card and loading the correct drivers.
The vender says that xine works with their card and if I understand correctly Me-Tv uses xine for its video display.
I have tried all of the cable scan selections offered by Me-Tv with out generating a valid conf. file. No channels detected. Is their some way I can check if my connection is good for the cable? I am not sure if there is a command line tool I could use. Also for US American cable what selection should I use? I have searched the net and have not found an answer yet. I am using Ubuntu Hardy AMD64. Can I use the integrated video card or do I need another video card? If any one can help I would be appreciative.

Hi.

First the scan, make sure you have dvb-utils or dvb-apps.
$ scan /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB | tee channels.conf
Please note the file location will be different if you use Ubuntu. Also you will need to scan with several files in order to see which one outputs the most channels or you can call your cable company to ask them what kind of system they have, IRC,HRC etc. Ignore the ATSC file, thats for digital over the air transmission and I bet you already know NTSC is analog.

Next I see you split the cable yourself. If you have a poor quality splitter that may introduce problems, remember that splitters often have a line loss of 2.5 db or more. I would suggest calling your cable company to check with them about your splitter.

Regarding TVTime, you said "xvoutput: No XVIDEO port found which supports YUY2 images". I have an Nvidia 8800GT card and unless I install the binary driver I do not have any xv port. You have ATI, have you tried the free drivers and the binary driver?

What kernel is Ubuntu Hardy? Have you emailed pcHDTV to see if the Hardy kernel is compatible.

What version of Me-TV are you using?

Thanks for answering MeTvFan. I am using Hardy Ubuntu 2.6.24-23-generic kernel. My version of Me-Tv is 0.517-1 . And I am using ATI binary x.org Driver for my ATI card. I just emailed pcHDTV to see is my kernel is compatible. I do have dvb-utils installed. scan is at /usr/bin/scan . I found the file us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB file at /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/example/scan/atsc . Here are the results.

I will call the cable company tommorrow and see if they can check my connection. That may be my problem.

I just scan using the file atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 and got 296 services. Can I put this in Me-Tv config. file?

If I'm not mistaken, you just take the resulting output file and put it at ~/.me-tv/channels.conf.

I just ran Me-TV and selected the service that I had scanned with and a .me-tv/channels.conf file was generated. But when I tried to run Me-Tv I got an invalid channels.conf file error. here is my log file.

Are you able to build from source? If you can maybe you can test QAM in Me-TV. I don't think Me-TV supports QAM, but that only because the Me-TV author don't have anybody to test the QAM. All you would need to do is get the latest development source and add a line, then build and see if QAM would work. Maybe the Me-TV author can point you to a list of *-dev packages you need, I already have everything I need but I forgot what I installed.

In the meantime try putting your channels.conf in ~/.xine directory. Install Xine-ui and see if it works.

DVB-C does work but I thought that you didn't use that in the US, I thought that you guys only get Clear QAM. Once again, I'm out of my depth here.

What we have here in the US must be clear QAM. Unless the cable TV
companies are using an DVB standard. Now I am confused, I know that
there is NTSC, ATSC, QAM64, QAM256. For over the air I only hear about
NTSC and ATSC. For cable TV via coaxial cable I only hear about NTSC,
QAM64, QAM256. From what I understand most cable TV companies have
moved to QAM256. So my question is, is QAM256 a DVB standard?

that file that you've just created as your source to scan (in me-tv's
channel setup) then check to see what channels are missing!

I have been out of town for several days. Today I got a TV antenna and tried that instead of my cable. I generated a channel configuration file using Me-Tv and the scan utility. The file I generated was based scan atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB .With both I am still getting the error of an invalid entry in the file. I am sure my card is working ok as the scans are working. I have google this error and other people are having the same problem. Is there some way to hand edit my file to get it acceptable to Me-Tv?

I have the answer to that one. 0.5.17 had a bug in that it checked the incorrect number of parameters in the channels.conf, this was fixed in 0.5.19 (2008-02-20).
