Channel Signal Strength

Asked by Dale

You know how some dvb set top boxes have channel signal strength, how hard do think it would be to added the same thing to Me TV and have it on the record / mute / auto surf / broadcast panel on the right hand side?

I really think that most non-geeks would hate this because it would mean nothing to them. i.e. TV works vs. TV broke. This is the target audience for Me TV, which includes my wife, the whole reason Me TV was written. That said, having it as an option that you can turn on and off is an good idea but I can honestly say that I have never used one.

Sorry, I'm treating this like a blueprint, your question is how hard would it be. I'd put it in the "moderate" category. The DvbTuner class would have to be made to expose some signal strength calls, which it already has. I've had some issues trying to add non-buttons to the toolbar, what about if it was put in the status bar as a progress bar?

I never thought about it going in the progress bar, but thinking about it now that would be the perfect place for it.

That way it should be very easy to turn off/on. Please create a blueprint so I don't forget it. Did you want to do it? I'm happy to give it a go but it's kinda low on the priority list at the moment.

As a signal strength meter is very helpful for correct antenna positioning I suggest too to add one. As a rough estimation should be enough there's no need for displaying absolute level. Showing something like 'unsufficiant=red=0-60%', 'sufficiant=yellow=60-90%', 'perfect=green=90-100%' would be sufficiant for most users.

Two proposals:

1. As Michael suggested something in the status bar. Either a progress bar, or an % indicator, or more simply a red, yellow or green traffic light, or even simplier coloring the displayed channel name from red over yellow to green.

2.Something similar in the EPG ? But then individually for each channel.
