Have you looked at Zapping

Asked by jbuc89

I just wondered if you considered merging projects with the Zapping (http://gnomefiles.org/comment.php?soft_id=279&entry=1) TV viewer as it is only analog now but does work great in Gnome. I wasn't able to take a look at Me TV as I only have an analog TV card in my computer.

Zapping IS a great program, the best I've seen for GNOME.

DVB is able to provide a few extra services over analog TV. Me TV was written to support these extra services. Mostly this includes the EPG data sent along with the stream. If you've only got an analog card then there are already some excellent options for watching TV including Zapping and TVTime.

In short, I needed a decent DVB application for GNOME quickly so I could convince my wife to use Ubuntu. DVB is quite different from analog TV and it would require many changes to Zapping to get it working. Since Zapping is a well established application it would be very difficult to get changes done quickly. Most of the Zapping application would have to be rewritten. I developed the current stable version of Me TV in under 2 months. I had no knowledge of GTK or libxine so I imagine that I would've been more of a pain to the Zapping project.

Also, I prefer C++, Zapping is written in C.

Still, it's an excellent question to ask.

Thanks,

Michael

I found TV-Time so much easier to use for Analog TV, than Zapping.

I looked at TVTime too. It was easy to use but it was not integrated with the Gnome desktop. It isn't developed with any specific widget set (Gnome, KDE, etc.). In my experience, it appeared to bog down other applications on my Gnome desktop whereas Zapping didn't. Just FYI, there is a problem with the version of Zapping in the Ubuntu Synaptic repository but there is a new build released on launchpad.net that fixes the problems.

I'm actually looking for a DBS tuner so I can take a closer look at Me TV. It looks like Michael is putting together a very nice application.
