How to get Events for a Day

Hi,
I'm extending the date-time-indicator to show the list of events when a certain day is clicked pretty much in the same sidebar type display that Maya uses. Is there a easy way i can get a list of events and there times for a specific day. Is this possible via command line parameters of via an API or via the contractor.

If its possible via the contractor, is a sample code in Vala available to get me jump-started on this.
