Managing the desktop

Asked by Aleve Sicofante

Now that Marlin and Pantheon Files are two different projects sharing code, will there be a chance that Marlin can manage ("draw") the desktop too? I know Elementary opposes this, but I don't know Ammonkey's personal view on this.

Hello there!
While on modern desktop environnements like unity or gnome-shell with their dash i don't feel the need to have a desktop, i understand this need on classical one. I don't have any definitive answers for this question, only reflexions on the subject: if the desktop should be part of marlin application or if it must be a separate element similar to plasma on kde with a high dbus integration with a filemanager interface.

I am tempted to be seduced by the later although i don't really like icons to be in a separate closoined space from the others widgets. I looked the google io last week and i really liked how widgets and icons are integrated in the new Jelly Beans. Contents adapting to the space available automagicly. If i could have a desktop plasma-like this that would make my day :)

But that's another debate. For the moment all i can say is stabilizing marlin code and releasing a stable version is the main priority.
Anyway if a developer is willing to work on a desktop implementation for marlin i won't reject it.
