Why users aren't asked if they want to enable the feedback plugin when installing?

Asked by Mikaela Suomalainen on 2014-05-13

I asked about this IRC earlier today without anyone responding anything.

```
18:54:31 < Mikaela> Why configuring MariaDB with dpkg (installing MariaDB or running "dpkg-reconfigure mariadb-server") doesn't ask if user wants to enable the feedback plugin?
18:55:07 < Mikaela> I think that I read that Windows installation asks it and it seems that there are more Windows installations reporting at feedback page than otheres, because it's not being asked.
18:55:30 < Mikaela> I didn't know about the feedback option either before I read about it in email that told me that new version has been released. Is it documented anywhere else either?
```

I am not Debian packager or developer, so I don't know how does one add questions to "dpkg-reconfigure" or the package installation, but I know it's possible as many packages including mariadb ask questions in them. If enabling the feedback plugin was asked during installation of the package, there would probably be more responders. https://mariadb.org/feedback_plugin/

When you install popularity-contest package or you are installing distribution that comes with it (like Debian), it asks you if you want to join and the data it collects is similar.

EDIT: Added the missing "doesn't", but now that log and IRC logs say different thing.

I'm a bit confused. Did you mean "Why configuring MariaDB with dpkg *does not* ask" ?

That would be an oversight, it absolutely should ask, just as popularity-contest does.

The documentation is here: https://mariadb.com/kb/en/feedback-plugin/

Yes, I did that, but forgot "doesn't". I'll fix that in the original question.

Should this be converted to bug report or is there one already?

Can you help with this problem?
