The email command interface is not working

Asked by Jibins

Hi,

The email command interface is not working for me. I have seen the following in mailman configuration :

"<email address hidden> : Allows you to run commands on your list via email. This is the address you would send to when requesting a subscriber listing."

But the same is not working for me. is there any special configuration for this.

Kindly help me in this, since i am looking into it for long time.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Jibins

I have configured mailman in a linux server and using the '/mail/aliases' file. And the entries for each mailing list in the 'aleases' file is like below :

# Mailing list listname
listname: "|/foo/baa/mailman/mail/wrapper post listname"
listname-admin: "|/foo/baa/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner listname"
listname-request: "|/foo/baa/mailman/mail/wrapper mailcmd listname"
listname-owner: listname-admin

The aliases you have installed are Mailman 2.0.x aliases. If you are running Mailman 2.1.x, a set of list aliases looks like

listname: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman post listname"
listname-admin: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman admin listname"
listname-bounces: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman bounces listname"
listname-confirm: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman confirm listname"
listname-join: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman join listname"
listname-leave: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman leave listname"
listname-owner: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman owner listname"
listname-request: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman request listname"
listname-subscribe: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman subscribe listname"
listname-unsubscribe: "|/foo/bar/mailman/mail/mailman unsubscribe listname"

What Mailman version are you running? What happens when you mail to <email address hidden>? What's in the MTA log?

If this really is Mailman 2.0.x, it is at least 7 years old. why haven't you upgraded?

If you are using Mailman 2.1.9, you must have aliases other than the ones you posted or list posting wouldn't work either.

What does the delevery failure notice say? Does it say something like "/foo/baa/mailman/mail/wrapper mailcmd listname - nonexistent command" or does it say something else?

Before I can tell you whether aliases like the above set of 10 will fix this, we have to determine how list posts are successfully getting to Mailman because in Mailman 2.1.9 the mail wrapper is named mailman/mail/mailman, not mailman/mail/wrapper.
