Is there a restriction on mail list names?

I created a list named chelsea-build - and when I attempt to send email to chelsea-build-request - the exim_mainlog shows 'no such user here':

 R=virtual_aliases: No Such User Here

other lines show 'r-mailman_virtual_router t=mailman_virtual_transport

I have several other lists, including ones, I think, that include a '-'
